An empowerment is a ceremony where the vajra master, based on his own realization gained in retreat, transmits a connection to the deity and confers on us the blessings associated with the practice of the deity. White Tara is one of three deities particularly associated with a long lifespan. The other two deities of longevity are Amitayus and Namgyalma. The purpose or motivation to receive a long life empowerment is to lengthen our lifespan so that we can accumulate the most practice possible within this life and thereby achieve our goal of attaining Buddhahood in order to benefit all sentient beings.

During a long life empowerment, the vajra master generates himself as the longevity deity, consecrates the torma and nectar, bestows the body-speech-mind empowerment, and offers the recipients a long life pill and nectar which have been blessed through the power of the vajra master’s meditative concentration. There are many stories within the Tibetan tradition of how long life empowerments have been used to extend the lifespans of great scholars and practitioners such as Arya Nagarjuna; this blessing enabled them to live long lives and accomplish the greatest benefit for all beings.

Due to limited seating, advance registration is required. NOTE: Registration is not a guarantee of shrine room seating; please ensure you arrive early to secure your seat. For full details on this event including when to arrive and what to bring, please visit our calendar at
