Düchen means “great occasion” in Tibetan. There are four Düchen festival days in the Tibetan lunar calendar celebrating four major events in Buddha Shakyamuni’s life – his display of miracles, enlightenment and parinirvana, turning the wheel of dharma and descending from Tushita pureland.

Sagadawa Düchen is the 15th day of 4th month of the Buddhist calendar when we commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and entering into parinirvana (passing away) of Buddha Shakyamuni. For a detailed description of Sagadawa, please open the first day of Sagadawa.

Kushok has advised that due to the blessings of Shakyamuni Buddha’s practice, the results of the actions we do on a Düchen day are multiplied 10,000,000 times.

On Sagadawa Düchen, at 5:00 a.m. at Gaden Samten Ling Kushok always offers the Mahayana Thekchen Sojong Vows – ethical commitments taken for one day motivated by compassion and the intention to benefit all sentient beings. Holding these vows for 24 hours gives us the opportunity to vastly multiply our positive or virtuous merit. The ceremony will conclude by 6:30 a.m. and the vows are held until sunrise the following day.
