We are hosting a virtual celebration in honour of both Kushok’s 21st anniversary and our Society’s membership. We hope that you will share in this special celebration so that we may express our deep gratitude to both our extraordinary and precious Teacher, and our invaluable members. As Kushok has explained, we now have three generations of members and this is so important for the future of our Society. Our members, and their dedication to Kushok, are integral to the continuation of the centre. For this reason, we would like to take the time to honour both our Teacher and our members.
Twenty one years ago Kushok arrived at our small corner-house that served as our meditation centre. Those of us who were present at the time were like children waiting for Christmas. Kushok’s arrival was so wonderfully opportune. As many of you may know, our founding teacher, Geshe Kaldan, had passed away in 1998, leaving only a small group of people to operate and care for the centre. We had been praying and waiting for two years for a new Teacher who would embrace us as their charge.
Perhaps, at the time, we did not realize that the task we were asking of our new teacher would be so daunting. We wanted him to be the bridge that connects us in the west, to the eastern culture and Buddhist philosophies of Tibet that we held so dear. Perhaps as a testament to Kushok’s more than two decades of teachings and outreach, we are now witnessing a convergence of western science and medicine with centuries-old eastern philosophies and practices.
Through his steadfast and tireless work, Kushok was able to manifest his vision of an incredibly beautiful Tibetan style temple, in essence the “outer ornament” that is home to the “Three Rare and Sublime
Ones”, more commonly known as the Triple Gem. One can come into this ornament and immerse themselves in the holy merit fields of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Kushok, a member of the Sangha and representative of the Buddha, has taught unwaveringly the rich and deep path of the Dharma. From close observation of our western culture and its focus on “external things”, he would teach us that this is the source of our sadness, discontent, and lack of inner peace and happiness. Many come to our centre in search of something that will bring them inner peace and happiness. Kushok continues to emphasize that the source of true and lasting happiness lies within; that we must work hard at developing the “inner ornaments” of patience, compassion, and loving-kindness. Only these inner ornaments will bring us true and lasting happiness and lead us to enlightenment. This is Kushok’s great gift to us all. Twenty-one years later, there is no doubt that this truly kind Teacher did embrace us. Kushok Lobsang Dhamchöe and our Society have become inseparable. We are the heart essence of our precious Teacher, and he is our Precious Jewel.
We have the perfect balance of a rare and precious Teacher, rare and precious teachings, and rare and precious members. Happily, we have a Dharma home where we can receive teachings and work together for the benefit of all.
