Event Description:
Gaden Samten Ling Tibetan Buddhist Meditation Society is honoured to host the creation of a new Sand Mandala by a visiting group of Tibetan Buddhist monks from India. The Abbot of Dzongkar Choede Monastery, Khen Rinpoche Jampa Sopa, and a group of Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Monastery will create a new Sand Mandala. It will replace our existing Mandala, which has been on display in the Society’s Shrine Room at the Alberta Centre for Peace and Meditation for the past seven years.

It is a unique opportunity to witness this ancient Tibetan Buddhist practice. The creation of the Sand Mandala will demonstrate the traditional method used, which requires focused concentration, skill, and experience. In this case, the monks will create a Buddha of Compassion (Chenrezig) Mandala.

A Mandala is a symbolic representation of the universe. By concentrating on the Mandala as an object of meditation, the meditator contemplates universal world peace. Engaging in this form of meditation, which is the highest level of mediation, requires an empowerment or initiation conferred by a fully qualified Buddhist master.

More detailed information will be offered by our Spiritual Director Kushok Lobsang Dhamchöe during the creation of the Sand Mandala. As well, Khen Rinpoche Jampa Sopa will give a Dharma Talk on the Significance of the Sand Mandala on Thursday, September 19 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Please purchase your tickets ($15) for the Dharma Talk in advance online or through the Society Office.
